Harold Moffitt Flanagan
October 19, 1934 – June 8, 2025
Harold Moffitt Flanagan, 90, of Farmville, North Carolina, passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Saturday, June 8, 2025, surrounded by the family he loved beyond measure.
Born on October 19, 1934, in Farmville to Arch J. Flanagan and Mattie Gayle Cheek Flanagan, Harold grew up learning the value of hard work, faith, and community. He was a proud graduate of Farmville High School, where he played tuba in the marching band, and NC State College, where he majored in Field Crops and swam competitively for the Wolfpack, earning several ACC medals.
While attending college, Harold met the love of his life, Alawoise Faye Strickland, at a church dance while she was in nursing school at Rex Hospital. The two married on April 18, 1957. They returned to Farmville, where Harold farmed alongside his father on the family’s land—later naming it Country Square Ranch. There, he raised crops and cattle, mentored young workers, and lovingly built “The Pond,” a gathering place for neighbors, friends, and countless family celebrations.
A devout Christian, Harold was a lifelong and active member of Farmville First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he served as a deacon, elder, board chairman, choir member, and Sunday School leader. He also volunteered his time to numerous service projects, including building the church’s handicap ramp and helping relocate the cemetery.
Harold was also a lifelong Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout, and a proud member of the Order of the Arrow. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 25 for more than 25 years, mentoring generations of young men. His sons and grandsons followed in his footsteps by earning the highest rank in scouting, a testament to the values he lived and instilled.
He was known for his ever-present humor, quick wit, and dad jokes that often made you groan and laugh at the same time. He never met a stranger, and his gatherings at “The Office” (the kitchen on his farm) and legendary Farrior-Flanagan 4th of July parties—hosting hundreds—were symbolic displays of his love of country, passion for building relationships and spreading joy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alawoise Strickland Flanagan, his eldest son, Jerry Harold Flanagan, his brother, Jay Flanagan, and sister, Sue Flanagan Auld. He is now joyfully reunited with them and countless cherished friends.
His greatest joy was his family and his legacy continues through his children Gayle Flanagan Bonner (Ed), Scott Flanagan (Lynn), and Mark Flanagan (Betsy), and through his treasured grandchildren Caroline (Bob) Davenport, Jeremy (Kristen) Flanagan, Jacob (Jama) Flanagan, Allison (Michael) Bonner Bogart, Leigh Kathryn (Jeremy) Bonner Wall, Sarah Ruth (Travis) Flanagan Brann, Holli Lynn (Matthew) Flanagan, Mallory Flanagan, Arch Flanagan, Jack Flanagan, and Sam Flanagan. He was also blessed with a growing number of great-grandchildren, who brought him joy, laughter, and hope for the future. In addition to his large and loving family, Harold leaves behind his sister Gayle Davis Smith, Dale Miller, numerous nieces and nephews, and countless other friends who are family by choice.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers who supported Harold in his later years, especially his faithful caregiver Barbara Hopkins and the devoted teams at Spring Arbor, MacGregor Downs Health & Rehabilitation Center, and Kitty Askins Hospice Center.
Harold built a home, a farm, a community, and a life well lived. He leaves behind a legacy written in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15th at 1:30 p.m. at Farmville First Christian Church, with the funeral service following at 3:00 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to Farmville First Christian Church (3776 South Main Street, Farmville, NC 27828), BSA Troop 25 (PO Box 173 Farmville, NC 27828), or simply “doing a good turn daily” in Harold’s honor.
