Welcome! We are First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Farmville, North Carolina.
November 25, 2020
Dear Members of First Christian Church,
I am sure you are aware that the number of new COVID-19 cases in the United States and North Carolina has been going up dramatically in recent weeks. Governor Cooper has issued some stark warnings recently, and Tuesday’s headline in the News & Observer reflected the Governor’s words that we are “in danger.”
The latest statistics on COVID in our area do little to disprove that sentiment. The 7-day positive rate in Pitt County is right around 7%. Moreover, our Regional Minister, Rev. Valerie Melvin, sent a communication just yesterday asking all churches in counties with higher than a 5% seven-day positive rate to consider not having face-to-face services until the county’s rate falls to 5% or lower.
My best, most pastoral inclination with regard to what is happening is that we should heed the advice of our leaders. Therefore, after consultation with the Worship Ministry Team members and the Elders, the consensus is that we should suspend our face-to-face worship services. So, I am writing to let you know we will not have worship in our sanctuary this Sunday, November 29. This also means our congregational meeting scheduled for this Sunday will be postponed. More information about that will come to you in the days ahead.
Rest assured that no one is more disappointed than I am about this. It is also troubling to me that we have only recently resumed face-to-face worship in our sanctuary, and now we are stopping again. However, I also believe it is incumbent upon us to do our part in slowing and stopping the spread of the coronavirus. And, as soon as it seems prudent to do so, we will start again with in-person worship services.
My friends, it seems that the word for today is perseverance! In the meantime, I send my prayers and good wishes to you for health, wellness, and a blessed Thanksgiving.
It is the mission of First Christian Church of Farmville (Disciples of Christ) to provide an environment where all who come can learn, fellowship, worship, and grow spiritually closer to God. We will fulfill our greater obligation to spread the good news of Jesus Christ by being of service to the members of our community and the world. Our efforts and activities will be done in the name of Jesus Christ.
